The Best Ways to Use Landscaping Gravel

There are so many amazing ways to use rocks and gravel when landscaping. It’s true: rocks rock! Gravel has many practical uses in landscaping. It can also be a very cost-effective way to improve an area’s appearance. The word gravel refers to small stones used to cover an area. Any kind of rock can be gravel. Some popular kinds of gravel include sandstone, limestone, and basalt. Gravel is used in gardens, walkways, and even front lawns. Keep reading to learn about the best ways to use gravel to spruce up your garden or lawn. Already know how you want to use gravel? Landscaping Gravel

Gravel is very common in landscaping. Gravel has many uses when it comes to landscaping. Gravel can be used to prevent soil erosion. Wind, rain, and even foot traffic can erode soil over time. This can cause major problems for plants that depend on the soil to keep them alive. Soil erosion can also make an area look dingey, especially if there’s not enough soil to host plants. In that way, gravel adds to the appearance of an area by keeping it from eroding.

Not only does gravel keep soil in, but it also keeps weeds out. When there is a thick layer of gravel covering the soil, it can be difficult for plants to grow underneath. Most of the time, seeds from unwanted plants can’t even reach the soil because of the rocks. If any weeds were able to make it to the soil, the gravel would usually block out any sun, causing them to die off. Weeds can’t grow properly when a layer of rocks separates them from both soil and sunshine.

Despite providing a strong barrier against weeds, gravel’s loose arrangement allows for a lot of water drainage. Since gravel is made up of many small rocks, water can flow easily through tiny gaps between the gravel. This makes gravel great for areas that might require a lot of water drainage. Areas that might be prone to flooding could benefit from gravel landscaping. Gravel is particularly popular for plants that will die or wilt if they get too much water. For example, gravel is very common in gardens that have a lot of cacti. Since cacti are usually native to areas that don’t get a lot of rainfall, they need a garden that can drain properly.

Gravel is one of the most cost-effective ways to landscape. Compared to other materials used to cover soil, gravel is relatively inexpensive. Organic mulches serve many of the same functions as gravel, but might need to be replaced often. Lighter material like grass or pine straw can be blown away by the wind. Alternatively, gravel is too heavy to be blown away. Unlike some organic materials that might decay, gravel lasts a very long time. Not only is gravel an inexpensive material, but it should also last much longer than other mulch materials.

Gravel Landscaping

Now that you know some of the general uses for gravel, how will you use it? There are many ways to incorporate gravel into your landscaping plans. Ideally, you’d want to make use of gravel’s many features. Dry gardens are some of the most popular ways to take advantage of gravel’s water draining abilities. Dry gardens are gardens that are built for maximum water drainage. They typically include plants from drier climates like cacti or other drought-tolerant plants. Without gravel, these plants could drown in soil that holds on to too much water.

Similarly, gravel can also be used alongside water features like ponds, lakes, and fountains. With enough rainfall, water features can flood, creating a huge, muddy mess. Gravel can hold on to the soil near your water feature while allowing the water to safely drain away. No one wants an ugly, muddy pond. Not only do these rocks allow for plenty of water drainage along these features, but they also serve as an interesting contrast. The rough texture of many small pieces of gravel next to smooth bodies of water creates a beautiful landscaping image.

While gravel has many practical uses, it can also be very eye-catching. Gravel comes in many colors. Gravel can be white, black, brown, beige, or multicolored.  Using gravel’s color diversity is one of the best ways to landscape with gravel. The color of gravel can be used to complement a home’s appearance. For a really unique look, use different shades of gravel next to each other to create interesting patterns.

Gravel Yard

Grass lawns may be popular, but they aren’t the only option when choosing how to landscape around your home. Gravel yards are an increasingly popular choice for lawns. Gravel lawns are very practical for areas that experience a lot of wildfires or droughts. In particularly dry areas, grass can be a safety hazard because of how flammable it is. With a gravel yard, there’s no need to worry about watering your grass. Instead, you can turn your whole front yard into a dry garden. What was once a long stretch of grass can now be whatever you decide to plant. Gravel yards and gardens are often much more visually interesting than your typical grass lawn. If you aren’t looking to totally replace your lawn with gravel just yet, there are still other ways to use it. Gravel can be used to mark out walkways. Otherwise, areas with a lot of foot traffic might look like trampled grass and dirt. Gravel can also be used in parking lots or driveways as an easy, inexpensive way to avoid parking on the grass.

I don’t normally write reviews, but I felt compelled given how incredible our hardscape looks! Arbeen Landscaping did a wonderful job designing our backyard patio and front retaining wall. From the pillars, to the landscape lighting on our patio, the accents added make our patio look like a resort. Tyler truly transformed our backyard and his workmen truly wanted us to be happy with every detail at every step of the process. We now use our patio all the time for entertaining and have received so many compliments on it. The quality and craftsmanship is superb! After constructing our patio, we just had them back to tear out our old retaining wall in our front yard and install a new one to match the stone from our patio. Within the new wall, he also installed new accent lighting which adds so much to our curb appeal. We could not be happier with the outcome! A great landscaper that takes pride in their work is very hard to find these days. Tyler communicated well with us, was timely, and completed our projects to our full satisfaction. I have had many landscapers in the past 26 years of living in our home and I am very particular individual, however, I have never had a landscaper came close to the quality of work, expertise and attention to detail that Tyler provided. My husband and I are thrilled with his work and will always highly recommend Arbeen Landscaping. Thank you again Tyler!

Complete yard transformation!! We recently moved into a house and the backyard needed major TLC. After having a few companies come out for estimates I was very impressed with Tyler and his company. They provided a competitive quote and was very helpful when it came to the logistics of how to get this done. We decided to have them put seed down instead of sod and it turned out great! The work was done in 2 days and the guys were very professional and respectful. It took roughly 6 weeks for the grass to fully come in and now our yard is wonderful. The kids and dogs love playing out there and we couldn’t be happier. Thank you Arbeen!!

Called for a last minute installation of a Green privacy screen. They came that week and installed in 2 weeks. All pines were at least 6 to 8 feet. Big job done in 2 days. Highly recommend. Update on my review, I called 6 times with my landscaping leaning and turning brown, at first he said I'll be there next week, no call no show, I called again 2 weeks later, again same thing, I called 4 more times now sent to voicemail, still nothing. Disappointed.
