You invest a lot in keeping your home looking its best. From following landscaping trends to outside renovations, everything you do can add to your home’s exterior charm. Even improving your driveway can drastically help boost your home’s curb appeal.

A survey commissioned by TruGreen of 2,000 homeowners found that 61% of respondents valued curb appeal because it made a good impression on neighbors and guests. While 58% reported it gave them a sense of pride in their home’s overall appearance.

If you’re looking for driveway border landscaping ideas, you’ve come to the right place. Transform your home’s curb appeal with these 11 stunning driveway landscaping ideas that seamlessly blend beauty and functionality.

1. Floral Edging

Floral edging is one of the most common driveway border landscaping ideas. It involves strategically planting a mix of perennial flowers along the border to enhance aesthetic appeal. This can include flowers such as daffodils, tulips, and coneflowers.

Choose a variety of different types that bloom at different times. Staggering the growth patterns of these flowers ensures a continuous burst of color throughout the seasons. Select a complementary color palette like yellow and purple or orange and blue blooms to give your home’s exterior a bright, bold infusion of color.

Be sure to maintain the flowers through regular deadheading and occasional fertilizing. This creates a vibrant and inviting driveway border that seamlessly integrates with your overall landscaping and adds a touch of nature and beauty to your property.

2. Solar Lighting

Integrating solar lights into your driveway border offers both practical illumination and aesthetic enhancement. Solar lights also contribute to safety by creating a welcoming atmosphere after dark. The National Association of Realtors reports that outdoor landscape lighting can offer as much as a 59% return on investment

Strategically placing these lights along the border not only improves visibility but also adds a charming ambiance to your outdoor space. Choose solar lights that align with your overall landscaping theme. You can find them in various styles from modern to traditional or rustic.

Ensure these lights have proper exposure to sunlight during the day to charge the solar batteries. Regularly check and replace batteries to maintain consistent and reliable landscape lighting

3. Low-Maintenance Shrubs

If you’re looking for driveway improvements, consider low-maintenance shrubs. Opting for low-maintenance shrubs for your driveway border provides year-round greenery with minimal effort.

Consider evergreen varieties like boxwood, yew, or dwarf conifers, as they require less pruning and retain their foliage all season long. These shrubs are known for their hardiness and resilience. This makes them well-suited for a driveway landscape.

Ensure proper spacing between shrubs to allow for healthy growth and good air circulation. You should also apply a layer of mulch around the shrubs to help suppress weeds and conserve moisture.

Low-maintenance shrubs not only add a polished look to your property but also reduce the need for frequent upkeep, which is ideal for busy homeowners seeking an effortlessly attractive driveway border.

4. Gravel Borders

Creating a driveway border with gravel offers a rustic and textured aesthetic. At the same time, they also require relatively low maintenance. This makes them a practical and charming choice for enhancing your driveway’s overall appeal.

Choose the type of gravel that complements your overall landscaping. You can incorporate different sizes and textures such as pea gravel, crushed granite, or river rocks. You can even experiment with different border shapes and widths to achieve the desired visual effect.

Properly prepare the ground by leveling first. Then, add a weed barrier before laying the gravel to prevent weed growth. Installing edging materials, like brick or stone, helps contain the gravel and define a clear border.

5. Herb Gardens

Herb gardens are functional and visually appealing driveway border landscaping ideas. In 2023, 55% of U.S. households are actively gardening. An herb garden along the driveway provides both visual appeal and a convenient source of fresh herbs for culinary purposes.

Designing an herb garden along your driveway involves selecting a variety of culinary and aromatic herbs. You’ll want to focus on commonly utilized herbs like basil, rosemary, and thyme. You can plant them directly in the ground or in containers depending on your preferences.

Define the garden with decorative edging or low walls. Be sure to consider the growth habits of each herb for an organized layout, watering, and sunlight. Use well-draining soil, apply mulch for moisture retention, and maintain a regular harvesting routine to encourage new growth.

6. Rock Gardens

A rock garden provides an eye-catching decor. Rock gardens along your driveway border offer a natural, sustainable, and low-maintenance landscaping option.

Select rocks of various sizes and shapes to create visual interest. Arrange them in a naturalistic manner. Introduce focal points with unique rocks, and layer them for depth.

Use well-draining soil and lay down landscape fabric to minimize weed growth. Apply a thin layer of mulch between rocks for moisture conservation. Regular maintenance will help keep the rock garden looking tidy.

Add colored accent landscape lighting for a striking effect during the evening. You can also incorporate plants like sedums and ornamental grasses that thrive in rocky environments for a cohesive look.

7. Concrete Edging

Concrete edging offers modern driveway border landscaping ideas. Creating a modern driveway border involves selecting sleek and contemporary concrete blocks or pavers in geometric patterns. This choice of materials and design creates a sophisticated look for your driveway.

Ensure precise installation for straight, clean lines. You may also wish to consider contrasting or coordinating colors for visual interest. Incorporating subtle curves can add sophistication.

Beyond its aesthetics, concrete serves a functional purpose to keep soil from spilling over into other areas. This allows for integration with various landscaping styles. Concrete is low-maintenance and versatile, as well as sturdy and durable, so it will hold up well over time.

8. Ornamental Grasses

Designing a driveway border with ornamental grasses is a great way to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of your landscape. Ornamental grasses add a dynamic and sustainable element to your driveway landscaping.

Select varieties like Fountain Grass or Switchgrass for visual interest and texture. Arrange them in staggered clusters and with varied heights for a layered appearance.

Choose grasses with seasonal interest and ensure they receive ample sunlight in well-draining soil. Ornamental grasses are known for their drought tolerance. This allows them to provide year-round appeal, even during the cold winter months.

Consider companion planting for an even more diverse border. Be sure to trim the grasses in late winter for optimum maintenance. You can plant them directly in the ground or showcase them in decorative containers.

9. Wooden Pallets

Creating a driveway border with wooden pallets is easy and eco-friendly. It offers a sustainable and cost-effective landscaping solution. First, you will need to disassemble and prepare the pallets to use the boards.

Repurpose pallets vertically for vertical planting or horizontally for herb or flower boxes. This adds a functional and visually appealing touch. You can cut them into identical pieces for a uniform look or stagger different-sized pieces for asymmetrical character and visual appeal.

Paint the pallets to coordinate their colors with your landscaping or home’s exterior for a cohesive look. You can also use them unpainted for a more natural style. Wooden pallets offer flexibility in design which allows for customization.

10. Cobblestone Border

Cobblestone driveway borders are timeless landscaping ideas with long-term durability. They offer an enduring beauty with their varied patterns and versatile applications. Cobblestones add a classic elegance and character to your driveway landscaping.

Choose an array of stones in complementary colors and textures. Lay them in designs like herringbone or basketweave patterns for visual interest. Consider adding contrasting materials for added depth.

Opt for irregularly shaped cobblestones for a natural appearance. Curved borders soften the existing landscape. You can also extend the cobblestone into pathways to promote a more whimsical flow.

Incorporate grass or moss infill between the cobblestones for an organic touch. Filling in the gaps with gravel or ground cover promotes drainage and aids in weed control.

11. Succulent Edging Border

A succulent driveway border is another modern and low-maintenance landscaping solution for improving your driveway. This involves planting a variety of low-maintenance and drought-tolerant succulents along the driveway border. In doing so, it creates a captivating tapestry of colors and textures.

Succulents come in various shapes, sizes, and hues. Each variation of succulent offers a visually striking and modern appearance of spikes, rosettes, and trails. Popular types of succulents used for landscaping include:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Agave
  • Sedum
  • Echeveria
  • Sempervivum
  • Jade Plant
  • Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana

Arrange them in clusters for a dynamic mix. Succulents add a unique and contemporary touch with minimal watering and maintenance required. This makes them practical and aesthetically pleasing greenery choices for driveway border landscaping ideas.

I don’t normally write reviews, but I felt compelled given how incredible our hardscape looks! Arbeen Landscaping did a wonderful job designing our backyard patio and front retaining wall. From the pillars, to the landscape lighting on our patio, the accents added make our patio look like a resort. Tyler truly transformed our backyard and his workmen truly wanted us to be happy with every detail at every step of the process. We now use our patio all the time for entertaining and have received so many compliments on it. The quality and craftsmanship is superb! After constructing our patio, we just had them back to tear out our old retaining wall in our front yard and install a new one to match the stone from our patio. Within the new wall, he also installed new accent lighting which adds so much to our curb appeal. We could not be happier with the outcome! A great landscaper that takes pride in their work is very hard to find these days. Tyler communicated well with us, was timely, and completed our projects to our full satisfaction. I have had many landscapers in the past 26 years of living in our home and I am very particular individual, however, I have never had a landscaper came close to the quality of work, expertise and attention to detail that Tyler provided. My husband and I are thrilled with his work and will always highly recommend Arbeen Landscaping. Thank you again Tyler!

Complete yard transformation!! We recently moved into a house and the backyard needed major TLC. After having a few companies come out for estimates I was very impressed with Tyler and his company. They provided a competitive quote and was very helpful when it came to the logistics of how to get this done. We decided to have them put seed down instead of sod and it turned out great! The work was done in 2 days and the guys were very professional and respectful. It took roughly 6 weeks for the grass to fully come in and now our yard is wonderful. The kids and dogs love playing out there and we couldn’t be happier. Thank you Arbeen!!

Called for a last minute installation of a Green privacy screen. They came that week and installed in 2 weeks. All pines were at least 6 to 8 feet. Big job done in 2 days. Highly recommend. Update on my review, I called 6 times with my landscaping leaning and turning brown, at first he said I'll be there next week, no call no show, I called again 2 weeks later, again same thing, I called 4 more times now sent to voicemail, still nothing. Disappointed.
