Why Build an Outdoor Kitchen?

Building an outdoor kitchen is a smart investment. It can boost your home’s value and attract more potential buyers.

Hiring a landscaping expert like Arbeen Landscaping ensures your outdoor kitchen project is a success. We’ll help you create a stylish, functional backyard for cooking, relaxing, and entertaining.

Here are more benefits you can enjoy from an outdoor kitchen we design.

Enhances Home Appeal

If you’re planning to sell your home, you need to make it attractive, both inside and out. Building a backyard kitchen is one way to transform your home’s outdoor space. A well-maintained yard can encourage you to negotiate better cash offers.

Modern backyard kitchens have stylish appliances and elegant finishes. These elements add visual interest and showcase attention to detail, making your home stand out.

Promotes Cooking Flexibility

An outdoor kitchen can adapt your cooking to suit various occasions, including:

  • Grilling
  • Baking
  • Smoking
  • Sautéing

This flexibility enhances culinary creativity and reduces stress during meal prep. It also makes cooking more enjoyable overall.

Outdoor cooking reduces indoor kitchen congestion. Multiple cooks can work simultaneously without crowding.

Modern outdoor kitchens allow for year-round cooking. This is because they’re equipped with overhead structures, heating elements, and ventilation systems. You won’t be restricted by indoor space or summer-only grilling.

Inspires Healthier, Engaging Meals and Outdoor Living

Outdoor kitchens inspire families to get creative with fresh ingredients. You’ll likely begin to grill lean meats, veggies, and fresh salads. Backyard kitchens promote healthier cooking methods, as they feature grills, wood-fired ovens, and smokers.

An outdoor kitchen also encourages spending time in the fresh air. You disconnect from screens and connect with nature. This can alleviate stress and boost your mood.

Exposure to fresh air, sunlight, and greenery encourages mindful eating. You savor your meals instead of rushing through them in front of a TV or computer.

Saves Energy

This summer is a great time to explore creative ways to cut energy costs. Start your outdoor kitchen planning now to help reduce indoor cooling needs.

Preparing meals outside minimizes heat buildup inside the home. This can prevent your HVAC unit from overworking and help maintain low electricity bills.

An outdoor kitchen minimizes the use of indoor appliances like:

  • Electric oven
  • Electric stove
  • Microwaves
  • Electric kettle
  • Coffee maker
  • Electric griddle or indoor grill

Using these appliances less frequently reduces energy costs, as they consume a lot of electricity. Outdoor cooking often happens in the evening when energy demand is lower. If your utility provider uses time-of-use billing with higher daytime rates, this can help lower peak-hour energy use.

12 Tips to Build an Outdoor Kitchen

Creating the perfect backyard kitchen requires thoughtful planning, smart design, and quality materials. These tips will help you build an outdoor kitchen that’s functional, durable, and beautiful.

1. Have a Budget

Oakmont Custom Homes estimates that outdoor kitchen projects typically cost between $13,000 and $30,000. This cost may vary depending on the kitchen’s:

  • Location
  • Add-ons
  • Size
  • Labor and installation
  • Used materials

A budget helps you set realistic expectations. You get to understand what’s feasible in terms of design, materials, and appliances.

It also helps prevent overspending. You allocate resources wisely and make the right decisions. Include a contingency fund in your budget for unexpected costs like permits, plumbing, or delivery delays.

2. Select the Right Location

Your outdoor kitchen’s location can affect:

  • Functionality
  • Safety
  • Comfort
  • Convenience
  • Your outdoor enjoyment

The right location will ensure your outdoor kitchen functions efficiently. It also complements your backyard layout.

Consider proximity to your indoor kitchen before deciding. This makes it easier to transport ingredients, utensils, and supplies between indoor and outdoor kitchens.

Other factors that can guide your decision include:

  • Traffic flow and accessibility
  • Sun and shade exposure
  • Level ground and drainage
  • Privacy
  • Wind direction

3. Choose Quality Materials

Quality materials used in outdoor kitchens ensure durability, optimal performance, and long-term value. They can withstand extreme weather elements like sun, rain, wind, and temperature fluctuations.

Quality materials for your outdoor kitchen include:

  • Stone-granite, natural stone veneer
  • Marine-grade polymer
  • Outdoor ceramic or porcelain tile
  • Pressure-treated hardwood
  • Bricks
  • Stainless steel
  • Concrete

These materials are characterized by:

  • Low maintenance
  • Aesthetically compatible
  • Weather-resistant
  • Non-porosity
  • Non-corrosive
  • Pest-resistant

4. Plan a Good Design and Layout

Planning your kitchen’s design and layout helps maximize space. The kitchen will serve its purpose without feeling crowded or wasted.

Proper spacing in an outdoor kitchen also prevents potential accidents. A cohesive design will seamlessly integrate your outdoor space with the aesthetics of your home.

To easily plan your backyard kitchen’s design and layout, be sure to:

  • Assess how you’ll use the space
  • Follow the work-triangle principle
  • Select the appropriate location
  • Plan for utilities
  • Zone your kitchen

5. Install Proper Lighting

Adequate lighting enhances the overall functionality of an outdoor kitchen. It enables you to grill, prep food, and serve meals efficiently.

It enhances visibility in the kitchen, thereby preventing accidents and injuries. Warm, layered lighting can make outdoor kitchens inviting and cozy for evening entertaining.

Some ideal lighting options for your backyard kitchen include:

  • Wall lights or sconces
  • LED strip lights
  • Grill or task lights
  • Solar path lights
  • Pendant lights
  • Post or bollard lights

6. Incorporate Adequate Storage

Adequate storage makes it easier to access utensils, spices, and other supplies. Outdoor kitchens with designated storage spaces also remain tidy and clutter-free. A well-organized and convenient backyard kitchen supports a seamless cooking experience.

Your kitchen’s space and layout can determine the storage unit you choose. Consider these storage solutions:

  • Pantry cabinets
  • Drawer units
  • Custom shelving and racks
  • Trash and recycling pull-outs
  • Base cabinets
  • Refrigerated drawers or coolers

7. Ensure Adequate Ventilation

Proper ventilation makes outdoor kitchens both safe and comfortable. It helps clear the air by removing smoke and odors.

It promotes better airflow, preventing gas buildup. This helps mitigate more serious problems, such as fire or grill explosions.

Reduced smoke buildup, grease, and gas buildup in your outdoor kitchen helps protect your surfaces and appliances. Countertops, cabinetry, and walls don’t get stained quickly.

Some ideal ventilation systems for outdoor kitchens include:

  • Vent panels
  • Roof or ceiling fans
  • Range hoods
  • Power ventilation systems, motorized fans, and blowers

8. Consider Utility Connections

Proper utility connections are essential for safety and code compliance. They must meet local building codes to prevent gas leaks, electrical shorts, or water damage.

Proper utility connections ensure your appliances operate smoothly. Whether you’re grilling, chilling drinks, or washing dishes, they’re key to keeping everything seamless.

Some appropriate utility connections to add to your outdoor kitchen include:

  • A gas line
  • Electricity
  • Internet
  • Water supply and drainage

A licensed expert, like an electrician or plumber, should always install them to ensure safety. These professionals also conduct regular inspections to ensure your connections work smoothly.

9. Add Cooking Accessories and Appliances

The right cooking accessories and appliances will turn your backyard kitchen into a versatile culinary haven. You’ll be able to prepare a wider variety of meals beyond standard grilling.

They also promote cooking efficiency. Consider adding these accessories and appliances to your outdoor kitchen:

  • Pizza oven
  • Side burners
  • Warming drawer
  • Smoker box or dedicated smoker
  • Outdoor refrigerator
  • Prep sink

10. Add Comfortable Seating

Comfortable seating in your backyard kitchen will encourage guests to relax and linger. This can turn your space into a social hub where you and your friends can gather, chat, and enjoy meals together.

Ensure your kitchen’s seating is inviting and accessible. Consider adding any of these options:

  • Dining chairs with a table
  • Ottomans and poufs
  • Counter stools
  • Built-in benches
  • Swivel or rocking chairs

11. Add Personal Touches

Personal touches enhance an outdoor kitchen’s overall visual appeal and ambiance. They also create a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor spaces.

They must reflect your lifestyle and personality. They’ll personalize your space, encouraging more outdoor use.

Consider adding:

  • Color palettes and finishes
  • Decorative lighting
  • Greenery and planters
  • Customized signage
  • Backsplashes and countertop materials

12. Create a Maintenance Routine

Routine maintenance is key to keeping your outdoor kitchen functional, safe, and attractive over time. You’ll protect your kitchen from harsh weather elements, preventing unexpected costly repairs.

You can maintain your backyard kitchen by:

  • Cleaning regularly
  • Covering surfaces
  • Sealing gaps
  • Maintaining drainage and ventilation
  • Checking for rust

I recently moved into a new home in Plainfield and was looking for a landscaping company that could bring my vision for a new walkway to life. Tyler at Arbeen Landscaping took the time to listen to what I wanted and did an incredible job turning that vision into reality. The finished walkway is beautiful and has made such a noticeable difference to the appearance of my home. Tyler was professional, reliable, and extremely communicative throughout the entire process. He was always on time, responsive, and made sure everything was completed to a high standard. His crew was also very kind, respectful, and professional while working on my property. I’m extremely happy with the finished product and the overall experience. I would highly recommend Arbeen Landscaping to anyone looking for quality work, great communication, and excellent customer service.

I don’t normally write reviews, but I felt compelled given how incredible our hardscape looks! Arbeen Landscaping did a wonderful job designing our backyard patio and front retaining wall. From the pillars, to the landscape lighting on our patio, the accents added make our patio look like a resort. Tyler truly transformed our backyard and his workmen truly wanted us to be happy with every detail at every step of the process. We now use our patio all the time for entertaining and have received so many compliments on it. The quality and craftsmanship is superb! After constructing our patio, we just had them back to tear out our old retaining wall in our front yard and install a new one to match the stone from our patio. Within the new wall, he also installed new accent lighting which adds so much to our curb appeal. We could not be happier with the outcome! A great landscaper that takes pride in their work is very hard to find these days. Tyler communicated well with us, was timely, and completed our projects to our full satisfaction. I have had many landscapers in the past 26 years of living in our home and I am very particular individual, however, I have never had a landscaper came close to the quality of work, expertise and attention to detail that Tyler provided. My husband and I are thrilled with his work and will always highly recommend Arbeen Landscaping. Thank you again Tyler!

Complete yard transformation!! We recently moved into a house and the backyard needed major TLC. After having a few companies come out for estimates I was very impressed with Tyler and his company. They provided a competitive quote and was very helpful when it came to the logistics of how to get this done. We decided to have them put seed down instead of sod and it turned out great! The work was done in 2 days and the guys were very professional and respectful. It took roughly 6 weeks for the grass to fully come in and now our yard is wonderful. The kids and dogs love playing out there and we couldn’t be happier. Thank you Arbeen!!

Called for a last minute installation of a Green privacy screen. They came that week and installed in 2 weeks. All pines were at least 6 to 8 feet. Big job done in 2 days. Highly recommend. Update on my review, I called 6 times with my landscaping leaning and turning brown, at first he said I'll be there next week, no call no show, I called again 2 weeks later, again same thing, I called 4 more times now sent to voicemail, still nothing. Disappointed.
